Anna Marie Tendler, a well-known artist, entered a mental health facility at the beginning of 2021 after suffering from severe anxiety, sadness, and self-harm for a year. She engaged in multiple therapy sessions, endured a plethora of psychological testing, made connections with other patients, and over the course of two weeks, she achieved significant breakthroughs, one of which was the doctor's observation that "there is a you inside that feels invisible to those looking at you from the outside."
Tendler describes her stay in the hospital as well as significant events that came before and after in Men Have Called Her Crazy. A lot of these moments, as the title implies, are influenced by men: the unfulfilled love she had in high school; the twenty-eight-year-old she became virgin to at sixteen; the absurdities and frustrations of dating in her mid-thirties; and her choice to freeze her eggs while all of her friends were getting married and starting families.
This exquisite literary self-portrait explores the irrational demands and anxieties that women encounter in the twenty-first century. Despite how overwhelming and hopeless that may seem, Tendler ends with a message of hope. "My wish for myself is that one day I'll reach a place where I can face hardship without trying to destroy myself," she states early in her hospital stay. She gets her wish by the end of the book.
